Environmental Sanitation: Govt Decries Non-Compliance, Seeks Proper Cleanliness

The Kwara State monthly environmental sanitation exercise held today across the 16 local government areas of the state.

The monthly exercise, first of its kind in the year 2022, saw the new Commissioner for Environment, Hon Abosede Olaitan Buraimoh, Chairman House Committee on Environment (Kwara State House of Assembly) Hon. Abdurasaq Owolabi, the Chairman, Enforcement Committee on Environment, Air Vice Marshal Ishaq (Rtd) Balogun, Colonel Kayode Umar ( Rtd) the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Pastor Abraham Kola Ojo, top management officials among others, moved as a team in Ilorin metropolis to monitor and evaluate the level of compliance of the exercise.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, the State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Bosede Buraimoh expressed displeasure in which the people of the state dumped their refuse indiscriminately, urging them to desist from such act and make use of the waste bin provided by the government.

As observed, there was no full compliance to the restrictions given to human and vehicular movement as some people who were not on essential duty were seen moving in and around the places visited within the State Capital.

According to her regular cleaning of the environment and improve personal hygiene would promote healthy living among the people of the state .

She noted that the ministry will work in synergy with environment stakeholders in ensuring adequate compliance to the monthly exercise, adding that the ministry will meet with community heads in order to address indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the metropolis.

She further thanked the state government for the provision of some logistics needed to make Kwara neat and clean.

Also speaking, a lawmaker at the Kwara State House of Assembly, representing Sare/Oke-Ode Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Health/ Environment, Mr. Olatunde Owolabi Rasaq, charged the people of the state to ensure regular cleaning of their environment to avert an outbreak of disease by disposing their waste to designated places provided by the Government.

It would be recalled that, as part of the effort to ensure cleaning and green Kwara, the state government during week appointed a five-person enforcement committee to sanitise the indiscriminate disposal of waste within the Ilorin metropolis.

The committee would work with existing structures in the Ministry of Environment and some ad-hoc bodies to ensure that the state capital is clean in a bid to guarantee public health.

Some of the sanitary violators were fined at Post Office, Ojo-Oba, Maraba, Oloje, Offa-Garage and other locations in Ilorin, the state capital.
