Police arrest 11 suspected cultists in Ilorin
The police in Kwara State have arrested 11 suspected cult members who have been terrorising residents in Ilorin, the state capital.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Lawan Ado, while briefing journalists on the arrest, said some of the suspects were involved in killing residents and robbing them of valuables.
Ado said detectives from his command, making use of intelligence reports, arrested the suspects at their locations in areas close to campuses of tertiary institutions in the town.
He explained that three of the suspects, who confessed to be members of the Aiye Confraternity, were arrested at Akpata Yakuba and that a locally made pistol was recovered from them.
The police boss said four others, who also confessed to being members of the same group, said they had been terrorising students of the University of Ilorin and residents around the institution.
The commissioner added that three more suspects were arrested at a flashpoint in Tanke area of the town and that they had confessed to be active members of the Aiye Confraternity.
He further said the suspects had been responsible for various crimes, including homicide and robbery, which were currently being investigated by the police.
CP Ado added that the command was on the trail of an ex-convict who led a robbery gang to operate in some parts of the town recently.
“While the ex-convict escaped, three members of his gang were arrested with items, including one Honda Civic car, a compact laptop and two assorted Android phones,” the CP said.
The police boss, while giving update on police investigation on the killing of a business woman identified as Alhaja Rashidat at Kulende area of the town, said an investigative team from the Force Headquarters in Abuja had been deployed to the state to assist in the investigation.
He said while the command was still looking for the other suspects, those that had been arrested would soon be charged to court.
