Court remands suspected armed robber

An Ilorin Chief Magistrate Court has remanded a 43-year-old mechanic, Abdulkareem Ibrahim Izuagbe of Akata Gando Area, Ganmo at Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin, for allegedly dispossessing a woman of her valuables at gunpoint.

The accused allegedly on April 18, 2016 dispossessed one Mrs. Ganiyat Aroyehun of Harmony Street, Basin Area, Ilorin, of her Honda Accord car with registration number ABUJA FH 161 ABJ, valued at N2 million, cash sum of N550,000 and other valuable items.

The suspected robber and others now at large had attacked the victim while she was buying fuel into her vehicle at S.O.T. Filling Station, along Taoheed Road, Ilorin.

The victim had reported the matter to the police at the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Ilorin, that a gang of armed robbers numbering about six attacked and robbed her of some belongings.

According to the Police First Information Report (FIR), during the course of investigation the gang leader (accused) was apprehended at his hideout in Ganmo on July 20 with an automatic Barreta pistol with five live ammunition by a team of police detectives.

The FIR added that the accused voluntarily confessed to the crime and gave the names of his gang members now at large as Mohammed Oladosu Kabiru, Alabi Oluwasiji, Isreal Olude and Olajide Kazeem Mustapha.

The FIR added further that investigation conducted so far had indeed revealed that the arrested suspect and four others now at large did conspire and robbed the victim of her car valued at N2 million, cash sum of N550,000 and other valuables at gunpoint.

The accused was brought before the court on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, contrary to Sections 97 of Penal Code Law and 1(2) of Armed Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act Cap RA11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The prosecutor, Inspector James Odaudu, who told the court that the alleged offence was capital in nature, objected bail of the accused and urged the court to remand him in prison custody pending the outcome of ongoing investigation.

Chief Magistrate Nurudeen Adeyanju, who presided over the matter granted the oral application of the prosecutor, as he ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin, pending the outcome of investigation. The court adjourned the case till August 18 for further mention.
