Plea bargaining inevitable in resolving corruption cases - Kwara Speaker
Kwara State House of Assembly Speaker, Dr. Ali Ahmad, has said that for Nigeria to make headway in the war against corruption, plea bargaining is inevitable in resolving some corruption cases.
The Speaker is of the view that there is no alternative to section 272 plea bargaining in resolving some corruption cases.
He gave this indication in Abuja, while speaking on the Roles of Lawyers in Maintaining the Rule of Law in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act convened by the former National President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Joseph Daudu.
Dr Ahmad explained that the nation’s court process was slow and expensive, stressing that for the nation to recover the fund earmarked in the 2016 budget, plea bargaining ,as enshrine in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 was inevitable.
The Speaker expressed confidence that the implementation of the Act would no doubt ensure speedy determination of corruption and other criminal cases in the country.
He eulogised Joseph Daudu for convening the forum which he said its outcome would go along way in proffering enduring solutions to the Problem of balancing rule of law precept with the prompt fight against corruption.
